Intermediate campers help build their own schedules by selecting one afternoon workshop per week. Our PM workshops run Monday – Friday. Workshops may be canceled based on enrollment. Intermediate campers may also choose to participate in the morning Academic workshop

This summer’s offerings include:

 

Academics (AM) Whether you want to sharpen your fine skills or continue to practice others, the Academics workshop is an excellent way to be a part of a challenging and inspiring learning process. Campers will be given individual learning goals and plans to help meet their needs. Topics include mathematics, reading, and writing. Please note that there is an additional fee of $145 to participate in this workshop.
STEAM-ers
(PM)
STEAM = Science and Technology interpreted through Engineering and the Arts, all based in Mathematical elements. It’s no doubt that STEAM education is the future! In this workshop we will explore all the STEAM elements and bring them together in practical and FUNctional ways. Please note that there is an additional fee of $75 to participate in this workshop.
Adventure Challenge

Campers are given the opportunity to try our Low Ropes Course on our campus which is right next to the Adventure Park. They will be challenging their abilities through games led by their instructor, developing trust, encouraging communication and enhancing self-confidence. They will also have the opportunity to visit the Adventure Park to zip line and climb through the trees one time during this week!

Archery

New for Summer 2017! Campers will be able to take on this Olympic sport after learning the safety and rules of the workshop. Then they can see if they have the strength and mind set to hit the bulls eye!

Dance & Yoga Campers will try out different dance styles and learn fun new moves. Campers are also taught to strengthen their mind and body with fun-filled yoga poses and breathing exercises.
Krazy Kamp Games Alaskan baseball, Amoeba Tag, People Machine, Minute Mysteries, Snake’s Tail, and Ha Ha Ha! Sound like fun? Oh yeah – every day we’ll try a fun and silly new camp game!
Nature Science Explore and discover the 140 acres at Sandy Spring through the lens of a scientist. Campers will be able to investigate the farm, pond, creek, nature trails and much more 
Paper Mache & Sculpture Clay creations, mini sculptures, paper mache face masks, and pinatas are just some of the fun items campers in this crafty workshop will create!
Sports Galore Enjoy the likes of soccer, street hockey, basketball, flag football, kick ball, and many more sports in this amazing workshop! Each day, campers will learn new games, refine their skills, and then use them to compete in different competitions. 
Video Production Lights, camera, action! This workshop explores the behind-the-scenes of film-making. Campers will use iPads to create films from still shots, interviews, mini film trailers, and much more!

Flag Football Throw, catch and score the touchdown! Our Flag Football workshop gives campers the chance to have fun in a supportive and friendly environment where they can learn and apply newfound skills.
Flight Science Join our NASA program! Campers are introduced to the basics of flight science including making their own parachutes, airplanes, flying saucers and water rockets. They’ll even have a chance to fly their very own Camp Quadcopter Drones!
LEGO Architecture Enter the fascinating world of LEGO’s to design, create and build. Each week campers will be given a task and must work together to complete the tasks.
Chess The ultimate game of strategy. During this workshops campers will learn basic chess knowledge and skill to compete against their fellow campers.
Soccer Messi and Lloyd have nothing on us! Learn the skills and tricks of the trade of the most popular sport in the world!
Theatre Games Props, Conjoined Twins, Bus Stop, and Whoosh, are just some of the fun improv games campers will do during theatre games!
Tiny Treasures Who doesn’t love anything teeny tiny? Campers in this workshops will make tiny houses, button books, tiny animals and other tiny treasures from polymer clay and other materials. Join us and discover your ability to make your own miniature world!
Painting Galore Do you love to splatter paint? How about water color? Then this is the workshop for you! Campers will learn different types of painting techniques and mediums to create amazing works of art.

Trailblazer campers build their own schedules by selecting two different workshops (one morning and one afternoon) each week. Morning workshop times are extended to 3 hours to make sure that campers spend good, quality time doing the activity that they enjoy the most! This is their “major” workshop. Afternoon workshops are approximately one and a quarter hours and are considered their “minor” workshop. Actual times may vary slightly because of either weather conditions or other fun all-camp events or activities. Workshops may be cancelled based on enrollment. Not all workshops are offered each week. Full workshop descriptions and schedules are found below.

Trailblazers Campers get to choose one AM and one PM workshop per week.

Morning workshops are three hours and are the camper’s primary focus workshops. Afternoon workshops run M-Th and are approximately 90 minutes in length. Workshops may be canceled based on enrollment.

 

Morning (AM) Trailblazer Workshops

Adventure Challenge 

Campers who love a physical challenge will love our Adventure Challenge workshop! Working with trained Ropes Course experts, campers are given the opportunity to try our Low Ropes Course on our campus. They will be challenging their abilities through games led by their instructor, developing trust, encouraging communication and enhancing self-confidence. Weather permitting, they will also zip line and climb through the trees in our Adventure Park 2-3 times during the week. There is an additional cost of $90 for this workshop.

Weeks: All

Pre-Algebra Review  This full morning course is designed for those students entering grades 6-8 who need reinforcement of foundational skills to help them succeed in their middle school math classes. The skills focused on will depend upon student needs, but will cover topics such as operations with decimals, fractions, percentages, order of operations, equations, and exponents. This is a great class for those students to find confidence in math and help them succeed in the upcoming school year. Students will be assessed through quizzes and tests. There is an additional cost of $100 for this course.

Weeks: 3 – 5

Court Sports  This workshop is all about playing different court sports (i.e. basketball, tennis, street hockey, etc.). Each day campers will work on fundamental skills, drills, and strategy for each sport. They will work on offensive and defensive plays and use these tactics in scrimmages versus their fellow campers.

Culinary Arts Culinary Arts is for the camper who loves to cook and to EAT! Campers are introduced to basic cooking and baking techniques and will also learn the sometimes tricky skill of reading and following a recipe. As students become more comfortable, they will develop more advanced culinary techniques and have the opportunity to follow more involved recipes. Campers will use fresh ingredients from our very own organic garden for some of their delicious creations.There is an additional cost of $45 for this workshop.

Weeks: 1 – 4

Drawing & Painting Learn to draw and paint this summer! Working with a variety of mediums such as charcoal, ink, pastel and acrylic paints, we will explore shape, color and line together. We’ll have fun learning cartooning techniques, sketching and painting while we draw inspiration from our beautiful natural campus setting.

Weeks: 5–8

Farming Fun Come join us on the Farm! We will spend our mornings growing food at the organic SSFS Community Farm. In addition to learning how to germinate seeds and start strong seedlings, campers will learn how to use companion planting for mutual benefits and how to design edible landscaping for your backyard! We will plant trees, propagate culinary herbs and share a meal with our freshly picked ingredients. There will be a 1-2 hour work session at the Farm each morning where campers will be eligible to earn Service Learning hours. Be prepared to get dirty, so dress accordingly. Boots or sturdy shoes are required. Everyone should also make sure to bring sun protection as needed including hats, sunglasses and sunscreen. We will work in light rain and have informative files on standby in case of steady downpours. Join in the fun and explore the connections between healthy soil, water, work and FOOD!

Weeks: 1-4

Fishing Campers will have the opportunity to test their angling skills against bass, bluegill, catfish and more. Young anglers will fish in the local ponds around our campus, which are FULL of fish! We teach and practice “catch and release”, so all fish will be returned to their natural environment.

Weeks: 5-8

LEGO Robotics If you love building with LEGO blocks then LEGO Robotics Workshop is the perfect opportunity to take this passion to a new level. We begin work with the LEGO Mindstorms base kit to master the programming of basic movements and then progress to more difficult challenges. Campers will learn mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork skills. Working in small teams, campers will create a robot using LEGO blocks, motors, and a multitude of sensors, including light, touch, and sound. We’ll have an awesome time building robots that can navigate mazes, shoot ping-pong balls…and so much more!

Weeks: 2,4,6,8

Theatre & Improvisation  This workshop is a fun-filled experience of theatre improvisation games and creative dramatics. Campers learn to “live in the moment” and experience the fun of creative improvisation with others. Campers will have the opportunity to adapt a short story and bring it to life during a special Friday Club presentation for the younger campers.

Weeks: All

Electronic Game Design Campers will take on the role of software engineer and create racing games, platform games and defense games. Learn all sorts of amazing and fun new skills in this specialized workshop. At the end of the week, campers take home a copy of the game that they created!

Afternoon (PM) Trailblazers Workshops

Guitar

What better way to learn the guitar than to be sitting under some beautiful, shady trees with friends?! Come join us as we learn basic chords on our acoustic guitars while enjoying the sounds of nature around us. If you have a guitar and a case, you can bring it to camp with you. If not, we’ll have one here for you!

Weeks: 5–8

Chess Our Chess workshop is a fun way to introduce chess to newcomers of the game as well as deepen the understanding of the game for more advanced players. Activities include learning basic moves, openings, tactics and endgames. You will learn how to analyze others’ games as well. There is much to be learned about life that can be taught in a good game of chess!

Weeks: 1–4

Campers in Action Campers will exercise their power as citizens and positive role models in this workshop. As part of this camp outreach team, campers will turn their creative thinking into positive action. Campers can earn service hours for participation in good deeds that can make the world a better place, and lead to a lifetime of positive impact.

Video Production Is winning an Academy Award in your future? Campers have the chance to create a video, from writing a script to producing the final product. We’ll use iPads and even try out our skills with our new GoPro cameras!

Summer Science Want to save the earth? Then let’s learn more about the natural world on our beautiful wooded campus. Through hands-on, outdoor discovery, campers will learn about life in our creek, in the trees and under the earth. Taking part in our Summer Science workshop will foster an appreciation for and love of nature and hopefully spark an interest in forging a deeper connection with the natural world.

Edible Creations This workshop takes culinary to the next level by creating works of art with food. Campers will use pastries, fruit, baked goods, and more to create different artwork that looks beautiful and tastes even better! There will be an additional cost of $40 per week for this workshop.

Weeks: 5–8

Art Bonanza Learn an array of different art forms, from sculpture and painting, to cartoon animation. Every week campers will dive into a different medium in which the certified teacher will teach, aid, and help campers create beautiful works of art that will make memories of a wonderful summer last forever.

Weeks: 1–4

Field Sports It’s time to take the competition to the field! Each week campers will work on different sports like football, baseball, soccer, and more. Our expert counselors will be able to assist campers working on a wide array of skills that will help them learn and grow. Campers may be doing offensive drills to work on scoring touchdowns or defensive alignments in baseball. They will take these skills to the next level each week with a scrimmage with their peers.

Dance Pick up some of the hottest dance moves this summer! Our certified dance teacher can teach you all the techniques, whether you are an absolute beginner, or experienced dancer. Come join this workshop for lots of fun and to make new friends who have similar interests to yours. We’ll try out traditional Hip Hop, Breaking, Popping, Freestyling and Stepping, and many more. You’ll have a blast learning all the newest moves!

Chess Our Chess workshop is a fun way to introduce chess to newcomers of the game as well as deepen the understanding of the game for more advanced players. Activities include learning basic moves, openings, tactics and endgames. You will learn how to analyze others’ games as well. There is much to be learned about life that can be taught in a good game of chess!

Campers in Action Campers will exercise their power as citizens and positive role models in this workshop. As part of this camp outreach team, campers will turn their creative thinking into positive action. Campers can earn service hours for participation in good deeds that can make the world a better place, and lead to a lifetime of positive impact.

Video Production Is winning an Academy Award in your future? Campers have the chance to create a video, from writing a script to producing the final product. We’ll use iPads and even try out our skills with our new GoPro cameras!

Summer Science Want to save the earth? Then let’s learn more about the natural world on our beautiful wooded campus. Through hands-on, outdoor discovery, campers will learn about life in our creek, in the trees and under the earth. Taking part in our Summer Science workshop will foster an appreciation for and love of nature and hopefully spark an interest in forging a deeper connection with the natural world.

Edible Creations This workshop takes culinary to the next level by creating works of art with food. Campers will use pastries, fruit, baked goods, and more to create different artwork that looks beautiful and tastes even better! There will be an additional cost of $40 per week for this workshop.

Art Bonanza Learn an array of different art forms, from sculpture and painting, to cartoon animation. Every week campers will dive into a different medium in which the certified teacher will teach, aid, and help campers create beautiful works of art that will make memories of a wonderful summer last forever.

Field Sports It’s time to take the competition to the field! Each week campers will work on different sports like football, baseball, soccer, and more. Our expert counselors will be able to assist campers working on a wide array of skills that will help them learn and grow. Campers may be doing offensive drills to work on scoring touchdowns or defensive alignments in baseball. They will take these skills to the next level each week with a scrimmage with their peers.

Dance Pick up some of the hottest dance moves this summer! Our certified dance teacher can teach you all the techniques, whether you are an absolute beginner, or experienced dancer. Come join this workshop for lots of fun and to make new friends who have similar interests to yours. We’ll try out traditional Hip Hop, Breaking, Popping, Freestyling and Stepping, and many more. You’ll have a blast learning all the newest moves!
